Wonder how much of that goes to the lawyers
$4.95 million compensatory damages
$7.5 million punitive damages
The article doesn't say anything about lawyers' fees...but in a lot of cases the defendant is forced to pay them if they lose. The idea is to encourage settlements if there's one that's possible.
From the article:
"He won't see all of the money the Rams were ordered to pay. Missouri law
requires that 50 percent of punitive damages paid by a defendant go to the state
Tort Victims' Compensation Fund."
So of that $7.5 million in punitive damages, the maximum he's eligible to receive is $3.75 million.
Best-case scenario (Rams pay his lawyers' fees), he'll see $4.95 million + $3.75 million =
$8.7 million
In Missouri, lawyers are limited to being paid a maximum of 25% against the awarded amount in suits filed on a contingency basis.
Worst-case scenario (He filed the suit with lawyers paid on a contingency basis), he'll see $4.95 million x (0.75) + $3.75 million x (0.75) =
$6.5 million
And remember, lawsuit awards are tax-free ![banderas :banderas: :banderas:](https://www.thecoli.com/styles/default/xenforo/smilies/banderas.png)
