“We are following a number of leads and hope to make an arrest soon,” Bridgeport Police Chief Armando Perez said on Monday, two days after Slinsky was shot dead.
Police sources said he was driven to Wood Avenue Terrace to meet with someone for a drug deal. But whether he was the dealer or the buyer isn’t clear. The sources said Slinsky had marijuana on him.
What is clear is that he ended up lying in the street with a bullet wound to his head, police said.
A few months ago, Slinsky and his family accepted a $100,000 check from the city of Stamford for injuries his family said he suffered from a drug-infused relationship with Stamford High School English teacher Danielle Watkins.
Gaining access to drugs
Watkins is serving a five-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to charges of sexual assault of a student, threatening and risk of injury to a child. Stamford High Principal Donna Valentine and Assistant Principal Roth Nordin were also arrested for failing to report their suspicions about the affair to the state Department of Children and Families.
As a 15-year-old, Slinsky suffered from dyslexia and fell into drug use, according to court papers. When he was transferred from Westhill to Stamford High School, things only got worse.
His urine tests began coming back dirty, and his mother told police she couldn’t figure out why, because her young son had no money and still would come home from school stoned on pot.
Several months later, in June 2014, as police were putting together their sexual assault case against Watkins for having sex with one of her older students during most of that school year, it became clear what was going on.
‘He was like family’
Slinsky told police that and older friend, who was regularly having sex with Watkins for most of the school year, got marijuana from her when ever he wanted, the arrest warrant affidavit for Watkins states.
“Even if (his older friend) was not in school, he would go to Watkins and ask for weed, rolling papers or cigarettes and she would always give him what he wanted,” the affidavit states. Slinsky also told police that he and his older friend who was having the affair with the teacher would ride around in Watkins’ black Altima and get high.
Slinsky’s lawyer, Devin Janosov, said Watkins was a horrible influence on the young man’s sobriety.
“Obviously, she worked against anything he was trying to do to better himself,” Janosov said. “Our hearts go out to the family. At this time we have faith that the Bridgeport police will conduct and fair and through investigation and get down to the bottom of it.”
A friend of Slinsky, Timothy Walker, left a message on Slinsky’s Facebook page saying he met Slinsky 10 years ago and spent a lot of time with his own family.
“I remember bringing him to ice skate at Rockerfeller Plaza, trips to water parks, lakes, family weekends and other activities too numerous to mention. He was like family. He will be deeply missed by all of us,” Walker wrote.

Officers in Stamford have accused Danielle Watkins, 32, of having a sexual relationship with an 18-year-old student and then threatening to fail him when he tried to break off the relationship, NBC Connecticut reports.
