Jones got his title shot because he stepped in because of an injury and even then he wasn't the first replacement option. I think his comments have more to do with taking a jab at the UFC than anything to do with Gus. Dana been talking real slick lately about a lot of his fighters recently and it's about time some of them hit back. I mean Dana used to always tout how UFC wasn't like boxing and that guys wouldn't be shielded to protect their status and that true contenders would face each other. It's clear UFC is now trying to protect certain match ups they want to make in the future as they see PPV sales dwindle and they continuously fail to produce any new marketable stars.
Beautiful statement, but, still a bytchmade premise :ehh:

I get that, but who does Jones think Gus should fight now? DC? He's not even down to 205 yet.

Here are the "rankings" from the UFC

1 Alexander Gustafsson
2 Glover Teixeira
3 Rashad Evans
4 Phil Davis
5 Antonio Rogerio Nogueira
6 Dan Henderson
7 Chael Sonnen
8 Gegard Mousasi
9 Mauricio Rua
10 Lyoto Machida

I can see the argument for Gus vs Phil Davis (I guess...Phil just "won" a descion over Machida that was suspect), but Teixeira is fighting Jones next, and Rashad just fought. Little Nog is actually ranked 5th. Who else would there be for him to fight? Hendo? Hendo wouldn't get out of the first round.

Mousasi is actually in the UFC?

Jones is right....

Jones got his title shot based off an injury to Rashad. People thought he was never in line for a shot at the belt until Rashad got injured. So its kind of hard to compare his journey to the belt as opposed to others. Glover hasn't fought anyone worth mentioning. Whats the purpose of having a number one contender when the number one contender hasn't had to beat out the other top contenders in the division. The only relevant person Glover beat was an uninterested washed up Rampage.

Jones is right about the UFC just throwing guys at him. Look how many times he has fought in the past 2-3 years, as a champion in a very competitive division its crazy. Gus was his kryptonite, but Gus didn't beat any top contenders to get the title fight. The only reason he got the Jones fight was because people believed he had the best shot to beat him. Even though he was Jones toughest fight, he still didn't beat anyone to get that fight. He lost to a Phil Davis (a contender) and he beat Shogun who is slowly fading out of the LHW title picture. I think what needs to be addressed is the lack of opportunities other contenders are not getting. Evans was impressive against Phil Davis, he had the lackluster fight against Nog and he wrecked Sonnen. He should be fighting Glover for a shot at the title. I like the fact that Cormier will have to beat Evans at 170 to get a sniff at the title. Make it competitive at least.
