If Bender wasn’t prone to injuries, he would’ve had a respectable career but he never was gonna reach the level KD reached.

You have to remember that KD went to college for a year, while Bender blew up off his McDonalds AA game performance and got the 3rd pick. On top of that, the Pacers were a contending team in that period.

Maybe I'm just mis-remembering then. Yeah he had size and raw tools but that's what most them high school prospects were like during that era.

Disregarding the result obviously, I don't know if I would put him Top 5 in terms of HS prospects with significant hype/potential surrounding them going into the draft.

They don't understand how the media hyped up a gang of HS to Pro players around this time since Kobe, T-Mac and KG were superstars. Jordan was gone and those years between MJ's Bull retirement and Lebron being drafted the NBA was desperate for a savior so every HS to Pro got a gang of hype.

And with no social media around, we had no place like the Coli to discuss shyt like this so between ESPN, the newspapers, the barbershops and the homies you had no choice but to give into the hype. Bender, Kwame Brown and a gang of HS nikkas got a look they should have never really gotten.

But to be fair Bender was a beast who was bust due to injuries.

Bender is another example of great talents who never got off the ground because of bad breaks. Like Sam Bowie, Greg Oden, and many others.

It is why people shouldn’t be so reckless when they start yapping about who was the most talented or most gifted or most athletic…

People don’t have a damned clue because their lists mostly revolve around a sort of survivorship bias. They can only recall the talents that made it.

All I can say is if you watched that McDonald’s game, it was basically this current NBA.

that’s the other thing too. I am not saying Bender was gonna be Durant, just the hype was absurd. Bender wasn’t ready for that and then the injuries started.
