He was an underrated director

He truly was.

I always hated how critics hated on him because of the "heavy handedness" of his films and how they felt he had to force race issues into them. I always thought those ppl missed the point completely of why he got his message across the way he did.

I did an in-depth research paper on him back on my English class senior year of high school and learned a lot about him. He made history and broke barriers, first brother to be nominated by the Oscars for best director and youngest person too.

Rest in peace, Mr. Singleton... :salute:

I remember writing my first script while taking a screenwriting class in college and just having so many doubts throughout the whole process. I was 21, feeling like I couldn't possibly have anything profound or important to say being so young and like I needed to live life before I could actually write something good. But then just thinking about how John Singleton was 23 years old when he made Boyz N the Hood really inspired me. Still insane to think about it, one of the most important, influential and iconic movies of all time was made by a 23 year old. Still an incredible accomplishment that still inspires me just thinking about it years later.

R.I.P. John Singleton. A true inspiration and a pioneer.

Interesting thing about PJ...it was shot in South Central right after the riots. All that damage you see is real, and so is the scene of the cops harassing the black kids in the beginning. Apparently there was some concern about Janet in SC, but John and Janet both refused to film on a Hollywood set.

John Singleton:rip: showed the hood wasn't monolithic. There are good people in the ghetto

warzone, raising there kids up with self knowledge and values. Boyz In The Hood (the first of his

many powerful flicks) sparked my my 7-year-old-mind, when I watched the VHS with my big brother in 1991:salute::wow::blessed::ohlawd::
