:ehh: I agree and like I said in OP, I would 100% do the same thing. I will add that during the election campaign, a lot of people took issue with Trump openly admitting to exploiting loopholes like this and lobbying politicians for more favorable tax breaks for the rich. Oliver has consistently called out that kind of behavior so I view it as a bit hypocritical on his part for not practicing what he preaches.
that's where we differ. if trump bragged about using loopholes and then said those loopholes shouldn't exist i wouldn't find that hypocritical. he would basically be saying, close it so i don't use it. john oliver isn't criticizing certain tax breaks and then lobbying FOR those tax breaks. he's using it as long as they allow them. he certainly wouldn't be crying publicly if those tax breaks went away.

this would be like in football where a coach is complaining in the offseason about how the defenders are allowed to grab and then someone creating a video of his defenders grabbing and impeding the opposition. that wouldn't have anything to do with his argument. asking for the rules to be changed doesn't mean you have to do the things you're arguing for BEFORE the rules are changed. that's ridiculous.

just because you're against a loophole in practice doesn't mean you're not going to take advantage of it if everyone else can. the point isn't to be holier than thou, it's saying you know "this is wrong and i shouldn't even be able to benefit from it." but as long as they leave it open you would be a fool to refuse to do it.

i'm fine with the current tax rates, but if it's lowered i'll be opposed to it, but still pay the lower rate. i'm not going to look for ways to pay more money when everyone else in my situation isn't paying more money.

This

Liberals have to be saints and without sin, or else conservatives jump up and down jerking eachother off as if it invalidates their opinion.

Meanwhile conservatives are consistently the bigger hypocrits.

@Ill Here's something recent from Crain's. The awesome article I had I'll have to do some digging on. It was either NYT or a publication with a lot of time/money it was really in depth.

http://www.crainsnewyork.com/articl...o-change-the-citys-unfair-property-tax-system

Jesus. Those long term housing policies always seem to kick NY in the ass. So basically if you own a home/condo/co-op you're getting subsidized tax rates and if you rent you're straight up fukked? That seems to somewhat explain the astronomical rental rates in some parts of NYC. Landlords aren't getting the tax breaks because its a rental property so they keep passing it on to the renter and raising the rates. I'm just getting up on all this but it seems those tax incentives from the 70's aren't really necessary anymore as people aren't fleeing the city but instead staying.

I'm not sure if he was actually advocating for policy change but he was saying it to bring attention to the fact these exploits exist and people like himself take great advantage of them and only he "can change the system because he knows how it works".I guess I'm stuck on the not practicing what he preaches thing but I get your points.

most if not all fiscal policies should be short term and reevaluated after the problem goes away. sometimes you need a tax hike and sometimes a tax cut. the problem starts when people treat these as one size fits all and tax cuts/incentives become a doctrine.

i just don't think practice what you preach works when you're following the tax code or anything legal. you hire professionals to best serve you within the bounds of the law.

None of these talking heads believe everything they say, it's about 80% truth and 20% theater

actually that is the exact definition of being a hypocrite.

if you practice the opposite of what you preach, if you can't stand on principle... then you are guilty.

But if everyone else is guilty as well, your basically innocent.

And if everyone is innocent in court, your definitely innocent.:russ:
