I think Joe Louis' style was to robotic to compete with Ali. He was a harder hitter but Ali could take a punch. Plus, people say Joe Louis had difficulty with mobile fighters.

Relative to their time/competition/situation, I can see the argument being made that Joe Louis was better than Muhammad Ali, in the same way that somebody would make the argument Wilt Chamberlain was better than Shaquille O'Neal.

If they fought each other prime for prime though, Ali wins that fight 8 times out of 10 in my opinion.

Ali obviously made a bigger social impact though.
