To me beef should be forever. If I don’t like you today I don’t like you ever and nothing will change it. That’s how it should always be but rappers out to make money so they put on these shows then come back and make songs together later like Jay-Z and Nas did.
I think there’s levels to it. There are some people I didn’t fukk it with early in our interactions only to later on become super cool with them but the source of dislike was usually misunderstandings or petty shyt that when spoken on like men face to face was easily squashed.
Then there’s people I didn’t fukk with do to slights or perceived disrespect and if, depending on the level of disrespect I felt if they sincerely apologized and were remorseful and minded to NOT repeat the offense we could be cool but not close chums.
For me if it ever came to a point where I had to put hands on you or scream on you or anything of the like then yea its mostly fukk you forever because it takes a LOT for me to get to that point. I’m not some hot head or some tough guy looking for trouble, i love peace and want all to get along but there are some people that are just going to be the natural OPPOSITES of you and you just gotta stay away from them or it’ll be conflict.
With Jay and Nas I believe it was easier to for them to get over it because even with Jay messing with Carmen Nas himself admitted to cheating on her several times WITH famous women like Eve and Mary J Blige (according to her) and she even claims to have once found Beyonce’s number in his pocket. Nas also wasn’t in a relationship with her when he found out about it. THEN he spanked Jay and unanimously won the battle so it had no bearing on his career. From Jay’s perspective he was a big Nas fan, never got the respect he felt he wanted from him, tried to take him down a peg and when that backfired it hurt his soul but his overall career was able to recover. They both realized that they were forever linked through the battle and being the top two solo New York rappers of their era so its best to make nice and be cool than to throw darts for eternity. They got money, elevated status, and added longevity out of the deal.
Drake and Kendrick are polar opposites in a way that even Jay and Nas weren’t. Nas and Jay were both New York natives, high school dropouts, hustled (Jay more successfully than Nas) started rapping at young ages (Nas more successfully than Jay) with the goal of getting themselves and their loved ones out of dire conditions.
Drake grew up affluent in Canada as a child tv star. Kendrick grew up in Compton surrounded by gang violence. Drake was raised primarily by his white mother. Kendrick was raised by both his parents. Kendrick saw Tupac and Dre film California Love. Drake saw The Moffats film the video for Girl Of My Dreams.
Kendrick battle rapped Charles Hamilton
Drake battle rapped mediocrity
Kendrick wrote his way to the top
Drake wrote checks for writers
There’s very little overlap between the two for there to be common ground.
