Timbo still got a lot of rap songs with Missy Elliot tho so that's just you picking a bad example :francis:

And comparing mainstream artist to underground artists is disingenuous as hell, most of Dillas best beats are recognized as instrumentals which is fine in the underground world but blasphemous in the mainstream world

A general top ranking shows respect to BOTH underground and mainstream, that's why Dilla is there.

If you see DOOM in someone's top list it because in the underground he IS legit top 5, and you can't just blatantly ignore purist underground rap's existence like that. He's the Nas/Jay-Z of that shyt and even those guys would tell you to put respect on his name.

Quick example.

People acknowledge the Harlem Globetrotters.

that ain't because they did anything comparable to NBA players, it's because for the game of basketball as a whole they had just as much impact as a legendary NBA player, you can't just wipe them from history because they weren't in the mainstream basketball league, same with And1 and Hot Sauce, they're the GOATS in those lanes of basketball and any real hooper would show respect to them, you can even see their influence in NBA players

A lot of the producers we put in GOAT lists have given their best work to rappers who aren't exactly elite.

I'm not saying Dilla shouldn't be respected, but when he's placed above Dre, who has shaped careers and created music that defined eras or Larry Smith, or Q Tip, etc.

I mean, people using Slum Village as an example. That's fine, but again, if I used a Timbaland & Magoo album to prop Timbaland, it would be laughed at.

RZA and Premo don't really have mainstream hits like that, but rank highly because they were foundation to the sound of a lot of all time greats or they had their own movements within Hip Hop. Its kind of why I would put Timbaland in a Top 10. The production was so crazy, people bought and listened to a whole album of Magoo. People would check for a Petey Pablo album or Bubba Sparxxx album just for the beats.

There’s like about 50 producers or close to it that I’d put before Swizz. There’s probably more too. Not in order but some of the top ones are in order. Swizz would probably be at the bottom of the top 50 because a few of the names listed might not make the list. But I’m probably missing a couple too tho.

this is a older millential/young gen x east coast thing

His beats were done in a basic grating way but he had hits especially in the last days of the tunnel so dudes like them there will overrrate him.
Ruff Ryders, Wild Out, Banned from TV, Money Cash Hoes, Down Bottom, What yall nikkas Want, Jigga that nikka, Tear da Roof Off, Bring Em Out, imma Hustler, Uproar

I dont think he even top 15 but I get them thinking about their youth and being outside when saying this

Damn I forgot nottz, easy mo bee, Clark Kent, large professor, showbiz, dame grease. I can’t believe I forgot them cuz nottz is in my top 20 and easy mo bee is probably top 20 or 25 same with large professor. I just thought this shyt off top so I forgot some names. Also beatminerz, sir jynx, beatnuts, toomp, justice league, PKiller, scarface/mike dean, Ez elpee, nick wiz, Sam sneed, toomp and Kanye def are on the list too. Although I purposely never added Kanye 😂 I forgot the rest. also some of the names on ur post I have on the list. Conductors there it’s just listed as the heartbreakers and I have the hitmen on the list as well. There’s probably others that we both forgot too that are better than Swizz. Swizz has some of the shyttiest beats on a consistent basis for someone who’s considered a legend. I agree with everything u said bro he may not even be top 100. Damn…. lol

More to add: T-mix, tha bizness, yella, Fredwreck, jr swiftz, doe Pesci, maybe Rick rock for that no more pain beat(really hit or miss tho and probably more miss for me), dj dahi, lil Jon, khyrsis, dual output, tde producers (sounwave as u mentioned), sadhugold, needlz, johnny j, mr porter, danja, mike & keys etc

Damn. I meant to throw Rick Rock on there and forgot. And Danja!! LOL!! But yeah, you mentioned a lot of people I had in mind too.

There's mad producers that are much better than Swizz. He's stayed visible because of his relationships with people. That's always been clear. But there might be 150-200 producers better than him. Which is wild!

In the business of music, and that's what them nikkas respect more than anything, it's hard to argue against him being top 10. He makes songs, anthems, whatever you wanna say..

I will say I'd never trust Swizz for an album, but if I needed a single at one point in time he was one of the guys you could go to.

The producer convo is always different because how much are we weighing talent vs the end product?

I'm not a big Swizz fan but I can't deny what he's done in rap. I'm also not a big Dilla fan but I understand how appreciated he was for his talent.

All of the best / most memorable Ruff Riders beats apart from that sh1t show.. “up in here.. “ which DJs hate..
are NOT Swizz produced. He did all the filer and is the reason why Ruff Riders and DMX had no classic 5 mic albums.
And then there was x could’ve been great because x was still in his prime and with the right beats he’d be killing it. The beats on that album are so underwhelming. A couple of the Swiss tracks are embarrassing like don’t you ever lol. How dope Dmx was and how big of a star he was the label could’ve easily called in to get havoc, Rza, premier etc but instead we got those mid beats. Whoever was executives producing that shyt completely fukked up. The sound that they chose for x that never left him after was garbage. There would be dope songs sprinkled in there but not nearly enough. Dame grease had the better sound then that swizz sound. . Every Dmx album after flesh of my flesh was mid to trash. And then there was x wasn’t even that bad but for Dmx it was steps down. He set the bar too high and that shyt wasn’t it. It aged like shyt. The one thing I liked that Swizz produced a bunch of is flesh of my flesh. I think Dmx made those beats hot songs tho.

Idahih- classic
Flesh of my flesh-4 mic
And then there was- 3 mic
Great Depression- pretty mid
Grand champ- really mid
6th album forgot the name sucked

Its easy to see how hes not top 10. Look at how dated most of his music sounds. His music was at the moment hot, not work that reverberates for years to come.

Cant say that about Premo. Cant say that about Havoc. Cant say that about Eric Sermon. Cant say that about Kanye. Cant say that about Dre. Cant say that about Quick. Cant say that about Marley Marl. Cant say that about Pete Rock. Cant say that about many producers.

Swizz Beatz was always mid.

No disrespect to Dilla but can somebody give me his Shook Ones, his Chronic etc I hear about his technicality but somebody give me his comparable bangers.
If somebody asked why Timbaland was a Top 5-10 Hip Hop producer and I used an Aaliyah or Ginuwine song to make my case, I'd be laughed. I never got why people would classify Tim or The Neptunes as R&B producers, but give a pass to Dilla.
Doing way too much

The song that made Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis nearly crash their car and then go in the studio and made Got Til It's Gone that same night:
