RIP
Damn...just think about how it was back then. Black people getting openly shat on by cacs, heroes being assassinated and framed, few black faces on the television, and a general atmosphere of white dominance; you could ask the average white or black person in the 60s or 70s if there would ever be a black president and they'd laugh in your face.
And that's the environment Jim Kelly arose in. That's the environment James Brown dominated; my uncle once told me he never even thought of "I'm black and I'm proud" until James Brown said it, then he realized he knew it all along - it just had to be spoken out loud to make that impact. Mohammad Ali. Jim Brown. Bill Russell. All of them were athletes and entertainers sure, but they were more than that. They were avatars for black pride in a time when black people weren't supposed to feel good about themselves.
And since we're talking about Kelly, you can't forget Bruce Lee. IMO if blacks could give out "honorary brother" statuses to people, he'd be at the top of my list. Lee was hanging with Kelly, teaching black people ancient shyt that many Asians didn't want black people to be taught. He'll always have my respect.
