how would backwards compatibility work?

and would MS make a machine where users could potentially spend $0 on their games and services?

Yeah, the ARM platform thing is probably going to be more cloud than anything. You can recompile modern stuff I'm sure with more ease, but how far back you go might complicate things further.

Unless, they do what everyone else normally does and piggybacks off the emulators.

But also remember, every Xbox branded device that isn't directly from MS is probably going to pay the Windows license fees, so they'll make cash on the initial sale at the very least. They sell the data. They'll make some cash off these devices provided they use Windows or w/e spin they might roll out.

Well, they should have been leveraging the tie in with PCs since forever ago. The last try was what, GFWL? At least them being backed into a lowly 3rd place has them analyzing what they have and potentially putting it to use.

They need to drop that custom XB focused Windows derivative. They got the time for shytty Windows S builds, give the players something. SteamOS has been cooking so they got a blueprint.

Will it run a modified version of windows?

Xbox and Windows kernel converged at some point in the past.

The bigger question is how lazy they'll be on that OS variant. Windows being Windows and by default having all that additional cruft. You don't really need work profiling, printer support, modem and telephone dialing on a gaming handheld for example.

They can't just drop in an Xbox UI and call it a day. That would be stupid. But then again this is MS...

Until people get their hands on the OS there's no way to know for sure. :yeshrug:

As an example, the Windows S release I bemoan doesn't really let you install anything outside the Windows Store. It's Windows in the shyttiest form. :ehh: So it is certainly possible they won't let you get anything outside the Store, but again have to wait until it becomes available.

To contrast, SteamOS still has a desktop if you need it.

3rd party device with a Windows license is also called a "pre-built PC"

I just don't see MS being so quick to give up all the money they get from their services, and digital store. they got those suckers ...console gamers paying a monthly fee to play online

A fair point. Maybe they lock it down like the main consoles? I think the uncertainty here is we haven't seen the Xbox focused spin yet. Closest thing is Windows S as a locked down option to "preview" what Windows-At-Gunpoint is like.

Also, might just be them willing to concede in some areas in order to push the software. To them, maybe they don't care about ASUS/Lenovo/XYZcompany devices beyond getting MS/XB software put on as they get the cash from the platform licensing (Windows) and probably from having Xbox branding and apps as well.

As something similar, Google gives zero fukks on Android as long as you include their GApps suite.
