American Gangster is the anomaly int that though, but in general Jays lackluster performance has been down to him thinking he has nothing else to prove, and generally not having anything meaningful to talk about,
Contrast that with Nas who had just gone through a failed marriage, his music in the past few years has been more potent and Nas in general isn't the type of rapper to rest on his laurels anyways, he isn't arrogant enough to think he is the undoubted GOAT.

And I think one of the great abuses of this modern time is that we should have had such high-profile artists, powerful celebrities. But they have turned their back on social responsibility. That goes for Jay-Z and Beyonce, for example. Give me Bruce Springsteen, and now you’re talking. I really think he is black.

"Adversity" is a relative term anyway. There's always adversity. Are you people referring just to financial adversity, as in "he's hungry on this" type of thing? If so, it's often true, but not absolute. All kinds of shlt drives people.
