Maybe it's just me but i always thought Jay viewed P as a threat when it comes to rapping & always planned to battle him on wax like he did with Nas.

Shame P & Jay didn't exchange obvious bars at each other around 97/98 when their tension started to build up for whatever reason.
Jay got everyone he saw as competition/was jealous of. mase is a great example.
