The term star is ambiguous here.
In wrestling terms, he's no Rock, Austin, Taker, HHH, etc. But people loved the Hardyz, E&C, the Dudlyz, Trish, and Lita during that time just as much.

Dude wasn't bad nor excellent on the court but everyone appreciated his style, and he got a ring. So whenever people mention favorite basketball players his name will always be mentioned
