I was a person that thought he looked more like Namor than Aquaman. Aquaman is an all-american pretty boy, while Namor has some color and attitude and style about him. Of course there's the beard but they could've trimmed it. And Namor grown a beard in the comics, since that's important. But the movie is still iffy. I don't understand why they want it to be "realistic". If that's the case, don't take the role and let someone who wants the tights to do it.
I think that's wack though. The only constant with the characters is appearance and that's how they are indentified. It just so happens that most of the appearance is race. As for the minority characters, there's nothing about Falcon (dude from the hood) or War Machine (soldier) that says they have to be black. Jubilee doesn't have to be Chinese. You want to at least cast someone that when the public sees, it screams "YUP. That's them!" When you first saw the X-Men cast, you said "YUP!" until you saw the uniforms...maybe not Rogue. Michael Clark Duncan as Kingpin worked because of his size and athleticism. When he put the cigar in his mouth, you saw Kingpin. That's the exception, like Wolverine being like 6'2. For the new Fantastic 4 movie, they just plucked names out of a hat.
I don't want sympathy or shock casting. I'd rather them create an entirely new character, or push already established minority characters. Miles is becoming so popular, so he's the black/dominican Spider-Man and can replace Spidey. That's how I want it to be.
