From the THR article:
Using Rings being a flop as the reason is stupid. Rings is an entirely different horror genre and the only reason the original Ring made any money is because there was a mini J-Horror fad going on at the time in the US. That fad has been over for a minute.
Friday the 13th on the other hand is ingrained in the fabric of America horror.
Besides these movies don't cost much and the last two times that this franchise actually had a legit wide release (more than 1000 theaters on opening weekend) they both made money.
Freddy vs Jason scooped up over $100 million off a $30 million budget and the 2009 remake cost $19 million and ended up making over $90 million at the box office.
The exact reason for the move is unclear, although one factor could be the poor performance of the studio’s horror movie, Rings. That pic, which like Friday the 13th was to have restarted a horror franchise, cost $25 million and bowed to $13 million over the weekend.
Sources say that execs quickly began second-guessing Friday the 13th, believing it would have chased the same audience, although others point out that the project is on the opposite spectrum of the horror scale.
