Not sure I agree with you on group of black people supporting him initially. Of course there were opportunists and followers that were supporting him but by and large I didn't see it. What I see was many new yorkers tired of the symbolism and the status quo-ish nature of all establishment candidates. Black mainstream media is just an extension of the black bourgeoise and/or sycophants and they have never really been the representative of the black culture and feelings overall in the past decades.
Buffoonery? really? I really don't see it. I see her being unserious on social media with jokes etc., absolutely, but to diminish what she does and verbally stand for when every other black politician are LITERALLY silent on all issues is unfair. And on top of that Walt, you are very informed about right-wing and fascist tactics so I am pretty surprised actually that you do not see this for what it really is.
Two things can be true at once.
Yes, right wing/fascists are scum and operate in bad faith at all times and they are utterly racist. Yes, Crockett is also - quite nakedly - leaning into spectacle, narcissism, brand-building and buffoonery.
Rarely venture into threads in TLR for political talk because there's no sign of nuance in the discussions whatsoever, and everything has - like entertainment and sports - been reduced to tribal and emotional appeal. But these impotent politics of opposition, resentment, and authenticity are beyond depressing. Agents, c00ns, ADOS, tethers, bothsiders etc... this is the rhetoric of paralysis.
I don't mean any of that harshly or judgmentally. The institutions we used to have collapsed or were dismantled. We don't have the obvious mechanisms for political change so we invest our time and energy into picking a side and trying to express rebellion by backing the figures who seem to be especially hated by the people we revile. But what we need, desperately, is organizing. Legitimate shutdown of industries and systems. Not tiktoks, not "clapbacks," not ad hominem attacks against losers like MTG, but specific socio-political strategizing. Everything else is just posturing at this point. It's amusement, and we're amusing ourselves to death while resenting possible allies in struggle. I don't think people realize just how dire circumstances are in terms of the climate, the economy, the ultimate goals of the tech oligarchs, and let's not even get into Israel and the Christian fascists. If you're not loudly and clearly talking about the people organizing to fight for their right to fukkin live, you might as well be Washington Generals status to me. Just controlled opposition.
