Most career points: 2,857
Consider this: The last player to have more than 140 points in one season was Mario Lemieux, who put up 160 in 1995-96. Twenty seasons of averaging 140 points wouldn't be enough to catch Gretzky's career record.

Most career assists: 1,963
The NHL has never seen the likes of Gretzky as a playmaker, and it may never see one again. It often seemed like No. 99 had eyes in the back of his head -- that's how good he was at finding teammates for what turned into easy goals. His assist total is 714 more than runner-up Ron Francis -- and he has more assists than any other player has points.

The goaltending was also incredibly atrocious back then while it's at an all time high level now, which is why they're trying to make as many advantages possible to create more goals during the season. Players will never catch his point total because the game will never be the same as it was back then, there's a reason it's hard for players to get even 100 points these days and it's not the lack of talent.

I couldn't even match Gretzky's stats when I played videogames

Crazy thing that whole team was eating, Coffey was scoring like 40 goals as a dman, kurri was scoring like 60, messier like 50, Anderson like 40 goals

And Gretzky was the gawd
He was only like 6 feet 170lbs, didn't even skate fast. Didn't have a hard shot or the Brett hull wrist.

Even a flabby n sick Gretzky was a ppg player

His last season was his worst and he had 60 points in 70 games
The league is different now. The pace, the goalies, it's not the same sport. It's like modern day Golf.

Compare the size of goalie equipment then to now. Goalies about 5x the size now. Easier to be better in net when your covering almost the entire net with equipment.

Most teams in the 80's didn't even have goalie coaches. It wasnt until the late 80's or early-mid 90s that every team had one. Also goalies back in the day were much smaller than they are now. Soon being shorter than 6'2" may be a dealbreaker if you're a goalie.
