Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of Evil, but I imagine from their standpoint, they see it as a no lose. Business tanks, they were thinking it was gonna tank anyway. He somehow gets a good run, they made a new star out of nowhere.
I can see the logic behind that, but the way that did it placed NJPW in a complete no-win situation, which should be a cardinal sin for bookers.
If Naito loses the belt before a signature defense at a big show, he looks like a chump and kind of a fluke (and when I say signature win, I'm talking about someone at the Okada/Tanahashi level).
If EVIL takes the NJ Cup, turns heel, then loses his title match, it renders the turn ineffective.
Personally, if you feel you HAVE to do this, why not wait until Destruction for EVIL to get the belt, do a defense at KOPW against a big name, then switch it back to Naito or put it on whomever you want to have it at Power Struggle (for one thing, that would really help Power Struggle not feel like the complete lame duck show it's been since its conception)? Delay the heel turn by one day, have him catch one on Naito in the G1, and you could do this.
The whole thing just feels like they wanted to make EVIL into a new top heel without really doing the ground work to make it happen because hey, that worked with Okada that one time, right? Well, not everyone's Okada, evidently.
Also, for all of you talking about being Young Lions, IC title level, etc., you really haven't made it until you're at that Tenryu top freelancer level. Just walking in and being a main eventer, because I fukking said so.
