Would make more sense if Tana had any sort of momentum as a challenger. You know, having him rack up some W wanting to stop Okada from surpassing his record, instead of him just showing up :tanacena: style and demanding a title defense because he's the only one left without a challenge and the defense record works as an excuse :heh:

Do the japanese fans even care about these title stats though? I feel like here where we are obsessed with numbers its ok but even though they always track how many title defenses each champion has, do the fans even pay attention to it?

I have no clue, but Gedo thinks it's important considering he's done the same story with Tana and Okada for their Ace reigns :heh:

You know what Tanahashi beating Okada could lead to? A year long Okada redemption angle :gladbron:

Yes, definitely. Wrestlers bring it up in promos, and commentators bring it up. It's something puro has retained in spirit from shoot fighting, title matches treated with great heft and circumstance, and the amount of times you can defend your belt being a real attribute to your greatness.

For a real life comparison, there where people invested in GGG's march towards passing B-Hops middleweight defense record of 20, and then as he got closer B-Hop outright started rooting against him.

Now imagine if B-Hop could get in the ring himself to defend it :banderas:

But even if you peep the pre-match graphics and shyt they always list what defense the champion is on in most puro companies. It's part of the product over there.
