This really hasn't gotten much notoriety in recent years, but the story came back this past week when Giant Baba had a bad cold which caused him to miss the 12/2 and 12/3 house shows. Baba is actually the ultimate Cal Ripken of sports. From his pro debut on September 30, 1960 until suffering a neck injury on April 25, 1984 in a match against Bruiser Brody & Stan Hansen, Baba never missed a match in Japan, a record of 3,711 consecutive games over nearly 24 years. After returning from that injury, Baba never missed another match until he suffered a broken leg on November 30, 1990 which kept him out of action for six months. He also missed a show on April 19, 1992 due to an illness and hadn't miss another show in more than six years. Granted, his style in the ring during the 90s has been a totally easy comedy match style which has virtually no injury risk, but from the early 60s through the late 80s, he was a main event performer and while the style wasn't as risky as today, a 3,711 consecutive game streak in a sport that is a hell of a lot more dangerous than baseball is something that I can almost guarantee will never be approached in any of our lifetimes. It was at the point when Baba missed the show on 12/2, just because he never misses shows, that rumors started that he was either dying or having to retire. But it was actually just a very bad flu and he returned on 12/4
