Why did the Japanese turn on them? Is it the same reason Roman had with a forced push?
That's the best guess we have.

I don't think we have a non-kayfabed account as to why it happened with both Naito and Shota (or even Chono) -as in, we don't really know what the japenese fans were/are saying about them, at least I've never read/heard a reliable source abouit- but it all seems to point being a mix of a forced pushed and stoic "good guy" characters that never really clicked with the audience.

The "young genius" gimmick very rarely is successful unless it's attached to a very cocky or downright heel gimmick. It didn't work with Nakamura either but he wasn't downright rejected as Naito/Shota/Chono.

Normally a young wrestler that gets over as a babyface does it by being a fiery underdog, not a "genius" or "next Ace". The only ones that come to mind are guys like Inoki, Baba and Misawa and all three had special circumstances around them that can't really apply to 21st century puro anyways.

Fujinami might be the "purest" in terms characters that got popular without going heel or counter culture but IIRC he was a one of those wrestlers that got over because of being an underdog and taking a while to finally become an Ace/main eventer.

Tanahashi went thru this too and had he not had the sympathy of the stabbing to fall back on who knows how hard he would've had it. People forget Nakamura was supposed to be the Ace. as under the old school regime the njpw Ace needed to be legit(Inoki,Hash,Nak). Tana was just seen as a pretty boy but Nak got hurt early in his reign and after Brock flopped they had nobody else to turn to. I think Shota will be ok but I'm still blown away Gedo is still guiding the ship.

Tana also turned up the cockiness of his character once he got the main event push. Kento Miyahara copy/pasted that formula in All Japan a decade later and it worked like a charm.

There's something about up and coming wrestlers having to show some kind of edge to them for the fans to truly accept them. Stoic gimmicks only work as very special exceptions.

Yeah, not sure what's to gain reviving that gimmick. Hayabusa's last match was so long ago that I highly doubt that name has any real value that justifies giving it to someone else instead of just coming up with a new masked gimmick, specially considering dude passed away :patrice:
