I thought she was pretty good in Moonlight. Not sure I've watched all of Hidden Figures and she seemed to be really good from what I remember.

However, watching her in Homecoming season 2 and Antebellum :picard:

How could anybody seriously consider her for Storm or any lead role. She's got a long way to go as actress.

I be pulling for her, but damn :francis:
be serious.. she may have chops but these weak sauce producers gives black artist weak ass scripts that don 't give you room to shine

Quality via critic options also =\= quality via fan opinion

she’s an industry darling that never translated outside her very small, very weird fanbase :ld:
She's got some Gold singles - I think saying [she] flopped is a stretch. While she was a featured artist - she's also on one of the biggest songs of the last couple of decades. Her albums have also been critically acclaimed - which definitely adds to the support she gets.

This conversation has been had ad nauesum on this site before - critical success and/or critical acclaim are enough to sustain support for an artist.
She's also generally more successful than 99% of music artists - talent, some success, and popular support, are enough to sustain a career.

Because of the machine.

And now we've come full circle

She does not have popular support. If you're sustaining these high placements without public demand then it's obvious whats up

i thought she was pretty effective in homecoming, the character itself was written to be 1 dimensional.

i'm not gonna knock her acting for that...

She has had backing from the machine in both music and acting. Weird that nobody cares either way.

I guess its that soulless Android like vibe she got. Even Beyonce smiles

That no one buys or listens to. She gets (or used to get) top billing and placements like she was doing OG Alicia keys numbers, yet all her projects flopped. It’s like the same 30 people across twitter who listen to her.

And here I was thinking it was just me. I hate the term "plant" because I think terms like that get used and twisted up so much that they lose their original meaning and people can attach them to any and everything.

But I've always felt like Janelle Monae was an artist (and now an actor) that someone or something very powerful is investing in MAKING me like.

Or if I was going to remove any allusions to a "machine" or being a "plant", I'd say that: to a vocal minority of Social Media (and industry) types, the idea of Janelle Monae is far better and far more popular than the reality.
