The word coolie is a term for a low class worker of Asian descent.

Asians were brought to the Americas as indentured workers when slavery was abolished in 1834. Most of the Asians brought to the Caribbean and South America were Indian. Significantly in Trinidad, Guyana, Suriname and Jamaica.

The term coolie is now a catch all term for Caribbean Indians and mixed African and Indian people. Although the preferred term for mixed African & Indians in the Caribbean is Dougla.

Indians hate to be called coolie.
