You think they make similar music?

:patrice:

His competition was probably Lou Rawls and George Benson etc

Barry White’s chart success was too threatening so they brought over Elton John

Similar to how they try to use the Osmonds to take down the Jackson 5.

Most cats don't have that baritone.
This. Getting brehs that look like him is one thing. Getting brehs that could even come close to sounding like him is a whole other issue.

I'm a generic azz baritone and it's rare for me to hear Millenial or Gen Z brehs that sound as deep as I do unless they drink/smoke a lot and got that rasp. Bass is even more rare nowadays.

Barry White came from a time when you had to take your craft seriously to compete with the greats.

When you have Stevie Wonder, James Brown and Marvin Gaye to compete with, you better learn how to write, compose and sing. Barry White could do all three.

When you have bands like Kool and The Gang, P-Funkadelic, Earth Wind And Fire pushing the boundaries, you better have an equally tight band. And that’s where Love Unlimited Orchestra comes into it.

Him and his ilk birthed the Princes, D’Angelos, Maxwells, Raphael Sadiqs. How many multi-instrumentalists today can write, produce and perform their own songs? If you wanted to be respected back then, you had to be the full package, in the studio and on stage.

I didn’t even get into the many artists Barry White wrote and produced for. And how many artists sampled his music.

Did you know one of 50 Cent’s biggest hits sampled a second of his songs? It was the last sample he cleared before he died. The GOAT. :wow:

Barry White is lowkey one of the most interesting celeb interviews I've ever heard... Cause he was far from a musical prodigy early on like MJ or Stevie or Prince; he was in the streets as a teen and got locked up for a bit, and after that was when he decided to try to make in the music biz

:ohlawd::ohlawd:Glad you made the thread OP I’ve taken an interest in Barry’s discography these past few years.

That voice. :wow: :wow::wow:

He’s such an interesting singer. Not only is his speaking voice pure gold, but with the way he sings you can really feel that he knows how to let the music speaks for itself. By that I mean that he pause appropriately to highlight some aspect of the melody, or to let you immerse in the mood of the song. Maybe it’s the fact that he composed so much music that granted him that understanding ? He really knew how to let the music breath.

And again that voice. :wow:

I don’t know brehs I just love his music. It’s always positive and aspirational in a way, we don’t get much of that these days.

Some of my favourites

When I lack motivation this is the one to listen to. That rich voice always hinting at deep possibilities… Love will find us. :ohlawd:
