Thanks man. But why not?

The pole would be so massive that it would take a great amount of energy to make it budge that's why you could not move it instantly

note that I use "massive" and not "heavy", as gravity and friction are of no significance to this. you would sooner push yourself back before you push such a pole forward. Also this is the same reason that when you push on your legs real hard, it leads to you jumping rather than the earth moving out of orbit

Well...

The initial movement of the pole still counts. That is, getting it into position, at any sublight speed is still gonna take centuries.

But if we ignore that... and if the pole isnt so massive that it starts bending time around it (black hole effect), and if you could actually accelerate it to any useful speed w/o destroying whats on the other side, then yea I suppose you would be sending info ftl.

I said it was capable of getting the job done. Just leave it at that.

No ignore the prep and the possibility of destroying the button. Those are a non factor. Also, the mass is WIDELY distributed. Black holes occur from high mass in small areas!

Prove me wrong or get outta my thread :camby:
your entire scenario makes no sense. you're not even sending information, you're pushing a button. Just because you're pushing a button that's far away doesn't mean you're making something faster than the speed of light. It's also going to take time for the force you apply to the pole to reach the end of the pole where it will push the button. It's not an instantaneous thing. let alone being FASTER than the speed of light. nothing has been discovered to be faster than the speed of light yet. your dumbass sure isn't going to be the first one to discover something.

What else can do what I've just done? I've affected something slightly farther than the speed of light. That is information. What is conveyed or represented by a particular arrangement or sequence of things.

How is the machine breaking the speed of light? All its doing is having the power to PUSH the pole.

ur assuming ur reaction time is faster than light too

Even if what you said made any sense, you didn't even do anything in REALITY, you have to make up this ridiculous scenario and it still doesn't make sense. Explain to us how it's faster than the speed of light. Show me the math. I'm humoring your stupidity by the way.

the inertia is a good point

but also you have to realize a bar is just atoms, when this fictional machine "pushes" (or even when you push anything) all you are doing is pushing the atoms that are touching the machine, those atoms then push the atoms next to them and so on and so on, in other words a "push" isnt really a "push", a push is just the beginning of a wave

this wave moves slower than the speed of light, so by the time the wave gets to the other end its way more than a light year past the time you began the wave

more info on how waves move through solids
