Fake news or not, refraining from breathing the cold air in, directly, will save your life.
It is true that you can die falling asleep breathing in freezing temperature air. Or at the least end up in terrible condition.
If you ARE lucky enough to wake up the next morning, you will more than likely barely be able to breathe because your lungs will have hardened and filled with fluid(most likely mucus).
That means shortage of oxygen going to your organs, including your brain. Which also means that, when you do awaken to this suffocating hell, you probably won’t even have the mental clarity to even dial 911. You’ll just lie there and die.
It is very important not to breathe in that cold air over the entire course of a night’s sleep. You can bundle up until you look like a sumo wrestler, if you fall asleep breathing in that air, you will die. Or at least be in critical condition by morning.
The key is to layer up, yes, but in addition and equally as important is to make certain that you sleep completely underneath those layers, from head to toe. You should be encased in your super bundle like a caterpillar in a coc00n. The only air you inhale should be the hot and slightly suffocating air circulating within the coc00n.
EDIT(proTip) -
Years ago I spent some time sleeping in my car during the dead cold of winter in Pennsylvania. When I would coc00n myself up for the night I would leave the slightest of cracks somewhere along the edge of the blankets to allow just a tad bit of outside air, in. This greatly decreased the uncomfortable suffocating feeling I got from breathing in the hot coc00n air. Just a tip if anyone reading this is going through it right now.
Excuse me??Could be worse. It's -51C windchill (-60F) here rn.
