The system in America is set up so that there is just enough distractions out there like TV, social media etc on top of that the educational system is set to discourage critical thinking so people have no idea how bad they really have it and how few actual rights they have.

there are a lot of rights on paper. rights that are more available the richer you are.

but in practice people seem really controlled.

and they seem to welcome it.

academics/teachers routinely abuse power in a way that would cause a student rebellion in the uk.

even the way scholarships and grants are set up in america is a system of "beg and maybe", coupled with financial punishment if you drop out.

i got a scholarship in the uk that was tied to my degree. there was no threat of debt hanging over my head - even if i had dropped out.

i didn't have to beg for it. if you had the grade the course was paid for transparent to you. non-payment and/or errors were not my issue i.e. no queueing at the registrar's office with the threat of expulsion or "holds" hanging over my head. exams were marked anonymously so you were largely free to voice your opinion in class.

lecturers who cannot speak english are tolerated, with people afraid to say anything to protect their grade and to avoid punishment.

etc etc.

american academia seems like it is preparing students for a life of subordination in the workplace.

-

systems in the US are not very forgiving meaning that people, trying to make it, are terrified to step out of line.

the UK can be high conforming in certain corners but mind and behavioural control seems to be less.

It's surprising how weak and controlled americans are ,,

Whatever happened to the spirit of fighting the power?

Power to the people?

Individuality?

People seem to be overwhelmingly concerned with keeping in line so as to not be sanctioned economically by society.

A bunch of people at all levels abusing power, while their subordinates at each level line up to ingratiate themselves to them (aka kiss butt).

I thought for a time that the USA was pretty similar to the UK but on reflection is it more like Romania. Just with stronger institutions, control and punishment.

There is a strong sense of compliance and conformity running through american society. Especially if you want to succeed economically.

Everyone is religious. Wig abound in corporate America. Grey hair..? Don't agree .. well hold you tongue. etc etc etc.

Where are the mavericks? And why does US society want everyone who wants to live a good working life to a boot licker?
