They’ve always done that. The NBA stopped it when Kareem broke Wilt’s scoring record and when Steph broke Reggie’s 3 point record.
The NFL stopped the game when Payton broke Brown’s rushing record, and then when Emmitt broke Payton’s record. MLB always does that for HR and hit records.
