What's stupid is that a candidate can lose the popular vote and still win the election.

The theory is that the popular vote would mimic the electoral vote if it determined the presidency due to how increased voter turnout. Who knows how it would work in actuality though...

Well they should through that theory out since Gore won the popular vote but lost the election.

To clarify, the theory would suggest that increased turnout in states like Texas, Oklahoma, the south etc would offset increased turnout in California, NY, etc if everyone was on the same page of their vote mattering. Again, someone else's theory/reasoning, not mine. And this is not the reasoning behind the creation of the electoral college anyway.

honestly thats why i'm not so thrilled about voting in presidential elections. Unless you're in a swing state your vote means nothing in the long run. it matters a lot more in local/state elections; otherwise its garbage

For those not in swing states your vote does matter because opposition votes are what turns a state into a swing state. I live in Ohio which was always a red state until gore. He still lost the state but there was enough democratic votes to make people take note. Now we are considered one of the most important swing states.

No matter what, your vote counts. It may not count this election, but just the fact that you voted gives you political power for the future.
