Most of the country gets ignored and they focus on a state or three. this time like usual its Ohio. perhaps if they abandoned the electoral college and went to a system where the popular vote winner overall won the presidency it would make the rest of the country matter.

cmon breh you know its rigged why you pretending like they wanna make it fair
i live in Michigan and if it goes blue like it usually does the republicans in this state's votes don't matter basically. if it was a popular vote thing their votes could still determine the winner overall.

I agree. The election should be decided by the overall popular vote. Though history shows the results wouldn't change much, I think it will get more people involved and it will make politicians be more honest, if they knew they had to appeal to the entire country, they would push allot less lies and propaganda.

this video shows how the electoral college can be used so that a candidate that wins 21% of the popular vote can win the presidency.

Unfortunately, the needs of the country would probably be dictated by roughly 5 States through the popular vote. The Electoral system is probably the best means available as far as including all congressional districts.

Ohio
Florida
Virginia
North Carolina
Colorado

those few states will decide the presidency. if one guy wins the top two on that list he'll be president by default. basically its already the way you say it is.

we have to have some protection for the smaller states.

Make the electoral college system proportional to the popular vote in each state and you would have more third party representation and probably a more fair system.

I understand that some states would have more power than others but that's already the case. The idea of the electoral college is outdated and not relevant anymore, and it should be changed.

Nothing protects the small states now. if you aren't dubbed a swing state your state is basically irrelevant. the candidates spend the majority of their time in a small handful of states and the rest of the country doesn't even come into play.

some of these states have been ignored so long they continue to go the same way election after election. even blue states with republican governors get ignored.

I don't disagree in that regard, but the EC at the very least provides some represenation as opposed to the popular vote...everything in Middle America would be dictated by either NY, Cali, or Texas

not true at all

states that don't change voting patterns are just as important as swing votes

senate/house seats are just as important as the election

word to scott brown and the healthcare law

What's stupid is that a candidate can lose the popular vote and still win the election.
