i had it where i would get a federal refund and use that to pay the state. but it was $150 topsI've considered doing it, but I'm scared to risk owning money.
You can tell the people who make good money because they in NO rush to owe money.I probably won't do mine until the last minute but usually I just e-file with H&R Block
They let you do federal and state for free and my taxes aren't particularly complicated

What confirmed me to continue doing it myself was in 2003. I hde a severance from a job and 401k cash in.. I did it myself, it said i owed.. i went to a profession for a consultation because i was refusing to pay the 3k or whatever it was... the professional told me there's nothing better than can do, it appeared to them i got the best numbers.I usually do my own taxes but may pay a professional to do it this year due to a couple major events in my life.
i had an audit back in 2009, they took away ALL my deductions.... said i owed over 100k.... went to the audit, got it down to 20k... i was told what numbers the IRS allows without receipts and i been doing that ever since.I owed $43k last year

I have receipts for all my stuff. It is also based on W-2. I do not remember the last time I got some money back.
