The Thing is also from that era after the horror comics boom/ban. Groot and a few other characters still around today, had a previous life in the old horror/sci-fi/romance/crime comics. While never said, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a Fantastic Four concept before the witch hunt and creation of the Comics Code Authority, that was more along the lines of an EC comic.
