Hot take: DLSS or PSSR or whatever makes devs lazy. :yeshrug:
I gotta disagree.

I think the pursuit of native resolutions at all costs is “lazy”

If stuff like DLSS PSSR allow devs to use the hardware power for meaningful gameplay, and artistic advances, while not worrying so much about image quality, i think that’s a good thing.

Everybody can’t buy a @Ciggavelli rig

Fair. It also allows for Cyberpunk type graphics, which run at like 13fps on a 4090 natively without DLSS.

I really shouldn't complain. Most of the games I've played recently were running 4k, 120fps, all ultra due to DLSS and DLSS only. It's a great advancement. I guess it'll only get better. I'm hoping the 5090 will allow for 4Kx2, 120fps, all ultra for my big super ultrawide monitor. The 4090 only really allows for 60fps at that resolution

Also, I need to build my new rig. I have everything, but it's just I don't have the time. I need to force myself to build it this weekend. There are so many games I want to play.

I hate being 50/50 on this. I agree that such advances are good as there has been technical shortcuts that changed gaming every few years anyway, so upscaling is no different. What gets me though is paying as much as Graphics cards cost now and requiring another solution outside of raw silicon to do the lifting.

Digital Foundry made an interesting point that Sony had to go out and copy what Nvidia was doing on their own, since AMD wasn't using machine learning hardware for their upscaling and RT. just further shows that AMD's hardware agnostic solutions are inferior
To be fair, it was never going to directly compete with DLSS in terms of raw performance. It was always meant to be able to give every GPU a solution. They do this frequently whether they get credit or no:
-AMD Mantle turning into DX12 and Vulcan
-x86-64 for desktop (Intel uses AMD instruction set last I recall)
-Freesync and it being adopted as a much wider standard than hardware-locked G-Sync

I would have to do research on it, but it seemed AMD took a slightly different approach to hardware due to them being super compute heavy while Nvidia has graphics cards that only really did graphics parallel processing well. After DLSS dropped and was terrible (1.0), FSR was born out of the much better DLSS 2.0 that showed it could work. Sony just knows there is a massive advantage with machine learning and leveraged it. The hardware agnostic solutions, like FSR, aren't going anywhere though.

Hearing about the new Nintendo having it and not the PS5 and Xbox proves that, that is is gonna be one of the major selling points of a pro console. Being able to upscale to 4k on a console while keeping a high framerate is gonna be very appealing to a lot people.
