Thompson: The Warriors’ Jordan Poole project kicks into high gear after win over Lakers – The Athletic
LOS ANGELES —
Stephen Curry, standing under the basket in front of the
Warriors’ bench, rested each of his arms on
Jordan Poole’s corresponding shoulder. A coach’s challenge halted the frenetic pace and created an opportunity for an important bond to be watered. Curry, face to face with Poole, made a pact with the third-year guard.
“If we’re going to be great,” Curry started to tell him.
That part alone made the moment a bit of an anointing. One of the all-time greats, and the face of the Warriors franchise, in some ways of the
NBA, physically locked in with Poole as a partner. Curry was declaring Poole worthy to ride with him on this journey towards another championship, towards new heights of legendary.
And this reality of Poole’s new status was further sealed with how Curry finished that sentence. Curry was mad at himself for losing
Avery Bradley and giving up an open look. But Curry decided to issue the challenge to Poole, who also lost Bradley on defense, that he was planning to issue to himself. Because they are in this together.
“If we’re going to be great, me and you have got to hold each other accountable,” Curry said. “I’m too damn old to be making that mistake and you’ve got to learn how to not make the mistake.”
What was abundantly clear in the Warriors’ 121-114 season-opening win Tuesday over the host
Lakers is that Poole is who we thought he was. A problem. A difference-maker. A dynamic playmaker who the Warriors can weaponize.
