the dubbed version definitely tried to project more masculinity onto him, for sure.

he is less like superman and more like forrest gump, an overgrown savant with a child like innocence. aside from fighting and training goku is pretty clueless when it comes to most things. in the 2nd episode of dbz when goku first reveals to the gang that he has a son, even though they all love him they are admittedly horrified.

the english version of the show completely misses this and instead tries to paint him as more of an alpha male.

Goku is a killing machine, that was established in Dragon Ball when he was a baby with Gohan. Only reason he doesnt fukk up earth is because he thought he was a earthling, then when he found out he was saiyan he considered himself a human after all those years on the planet, like vegeta does in battle of the gods

Never had a chance to read it but the TV show was a big part of my childhood

Akira always said that it annoyed him how Goku got changed into a righteous hero when the series got translated to anime. The Superman comparisions didn't really help either. In Dragon Ball Super, he's more or less, being written how he was intended to be.
