I think that's extremely realistic. Not everybody has that type of relationship with their parents to where they can reach out for help and some are just too stubborn to admit that they are struggling and are embarrassed to reach out.
If the fictional relationship is like that it seems ripe to be dramatized.
Issa strikes me as the type to spit out false narratives to her girlfriends.I don't think Molly looks down on Daniel cuz he's a musician, or looks down on him at all. ...when they found out she was sleeping in his bed. They've seen this play out over and over. It'll be good for a while, until it ain't, then they're left dealing with Issa in the aftermath. Plus, I'm sure Molly blames Daniel for the Lawrence breakup. Even tho she blames Issa too, it's just one more thing that the Issa-Daniel relationship has blown up.
