Ehh, I fully believe set it off was a property of its time - the whole hip hop to film movement - and one that won’t catch a new audience upon retelling. That will always be a “black” movie thus it won’t go beyond the community, and set it off is on cable frequently enough for younger audiences to know it.The vast majority of.movies don't need, nor benefit from, a remake. I think Set it Off is underrated enough that a modern retelling could reach a new audience while having it's own statement to make. I brought up GB and Oceans because they were viewed as pandering. This wouldn't be. I also think a move about black women made by a black woman would be well received and thoughtfully produced. I would never ask for a The Wood remake, for example, because it's a more well known movie that I don't think could be remade while adding anything of note. Black, female, heist movie is a much narrower niche.
I’m not seeing it here, and for the ticket that Issa has written herself, I’d love to see her bring new stories to black film. Her and/or Coogler wasting time on remakes would be/is disappointing
