The line about pre-1948 Palestine being an underdeveloped desert is one I’ve heard a lot, yet I recall reading an old book once where places like Jerusalem, Jericho, Bethlehem and Nazareth were all mentioned.

This is exactly what fascism sounds like. Churchill was a fascist. WW2 wasn't a war against fascism. It was a clash of empires, both run by fascisms in different forms. The German nazism was internal, British external on its empire.
