I think there was a study that showed religions/ideologies fostered in a societies that had plenty of resources and no lingering threats to survival were usually progressive. You could see this with Budhism and Hinduism which both emerged from societys who at the time were the food bowl of the world. Or even Western Liberalism. Whilst ideologies that had emerged from regions renown for sporadic rainfall patterns, limited resources and unstable political situations were often backward and oppressive
