Is there any one super hero more popular than Spider-Man at this point?

1. They weren't happy with those numbers from the Garfield movies because Batman was doing over a billion. Homecoming didn't fix that.

the ASM series got bushed not just cuz of profit margins - the Sony spiderman movies will always do well in box office because its spiderman ... (which is why sony will never give it up)

but both Toby & Andrew's movies got panned by critics since S3, it was damaging the franchise equity in the long run

being associated with the connectivity of the MCU helps both parties, neither needs the other but its the best business move in the long run

if you read the leaks between the two, Sony was ignorantly clueless for a lot of their development process, the entire plot for the 3rd movie of the ASM series sounded dumb asf

which makes the fact that they pulled off spiderverse more impressive ... but thats also with the benefit/caveat of it being animated, they never were able to replicate that type of critical success in any of their live action attempts until the MCU deal (S2 was the closest but its also relative to the time it came out and the superhero genre market then)

if you look at the general narrative on these sony characters, it was largely rooted in nostalgia rather than how dope they were the 1st time round ... shyt, even Dafoe's Goblin is more well received today than the S1 version

You could've stopped at its beneficial to be in the mcu. Considering how the mcu spiderman movies were and the best one being centered around a gimmick and nostalgia doesn't seem like you're levying a fair criticism.

I mean that X-men were more popular than the avengers. From 80’s since the Chris Claremont run. Some of the individual avengers were popular due to tv and movies but as a whole they weren’t fukking with X-men from like 81 until the early 00’s until Civil War took place in the comics. Ironman himself was almost a non-entity when his movie came out, outside of a handful of games and the short lived cartoon

The x-men are still more popular in comics, they just don’t have big movie tie ins right now
This is on point
