When you're athletic like they are, defense becomes an exercise of effort. They put in the effort on defense because they might not be as skilled on offense and you have to contribute somehow. Alot of American born "late bloomers" are sort of the same way (Kawhi, Klay Thompson, Anthony Davis). Also for some American born athletes they grew up glamorizing the flash and flair of the game (And 1) and didn't really care too much about the other side of the game. This mentality follows them to the next level.
