They're depending too much on Crosby and Ovi. Won't promote the other younger players.

Too woke.

All the teams play the same way.

Too many slap shots from outside the line.

All ESPN does is talk about the LA Kings, NY Rangers, Crosby and Ovi.

All the fans are illegally streaming the games.

Players don't try hard in the regular season.

Load management.

Players are paid way too much.

Too Woke.

Too many slap shots.

Too many 3 point shots now in the NHL.

What’s even more crazy is Ovechkin is 23 goals away from breaking a record that was unfathomable to imagine anyone breaking it (Gretzky’s 894 goals)

It’s like if someone was to get Rice 22k yards
Or someone averaging Wilt’s 50 points per game in a season and the NHL is doing nothing to promote this feat. At least with the NBA when Bron was close to getting the scoring record, the league started highlighting it, promoting it in commercials. NHL though :francis: crickets

I said this about the NBA and it probably holds true to Hockey. Times are just different now, your average casual would prefer to see clips on IG than sit through a game. The world is different and so is our attention span.

NFL is immune because almost every game counts and is played on a weekend, it’s like a relaxation holiday. Outside of streaming affecting ratings no one is mentioning that it might just be a culture shift and people don’t care as much anymore. I guarantee replacing half the 3 pointers with midrange shots will not increase ratings one bit.

Top stars like McDavid and MacKinnon are :snooze: personality wise. NHL stars haven’t been consistently on national ads in US since the 90s. So that’s another big issue besides the ones listed earlier.

Cable ratings is almost like radio ratings in the early 2010s. Only :flabbynsick: care.

The NFL is what it is cause it’s almost like tradition and it’s so few games.

This a massive part of it. Most people don’t even watch NBA games now a days but if you’re on Twitter or IG, you’re still seeing every highlight dunk, block, crossover from the night before. Then because of the “drama” in the NBA, you get a ton of storylines that show up on your feed about what’s currently happening in the league through sound bites, clips of podcasts/shows, etc. so you get to keep up with the league even if you not watching. NHL has none of this.

The league is just so behind with how to connect with new audiences and it’s mainly cause it’s an “old boys club” of cacs working in these front offices who are clueless. I don’t understand how they don’t see growing the game = more revenue and more money to go around to get more eyes on the game.

Facts.

I promise if they got more brothers playing it the ratings would go up.

Then why have NHL ratings fallen off more than NBA ratings?

It’s obvious that the NHL shoots too many 3s, right? :jbhmm:

This shyt is crazy. The perception is drastically different because one is a majority-black league while the other is almost exclusively Caucasian.

You don't have have c00ns and stans with their crab-in-the-barrel mentality or MAGA grifters using the viewership numbers to push their respective agendas as a result.

The NHL is really bad at marketing the product. Whether it’s individual stars, marquee events like the Winter Classic and even the upcoming 4 Nations Face Off, although I did hear an ad on the radio for that one.

No one knew the Winter Classic was on. The league didn’t promote it leading up to the game and they also scheduled 10-11 games the same day, taking away the “unqiueness” of the winter classic. That should have been the only NHL game on for the day.

Doesn’t help that it was the same day as the World Hockey Juniors which most of Canada is watching and College Football Playoffs which most Americans are watching. Just a really terrible rollout that would lead to these results. The NHL is so fukking dope, there’s just too many dinosaurs working in the front offices that don’t know how to market and push the league to a broader audience. And sadly, it’s like the league doesn’t care.
It has somehow gotten worse year over year. I go to like 10 kraken games a year and EVERYONE has a blast...the NHL does a dog shyt job at selling the game.
