:mjlol:can't relate to a black woman, nikka just told on self.

that's what happens when you wanna be one of the boys more than black.
I was bout to add in place of Black Men. All apologies cause I don't really know how to say this without coming off the wrong way...which Im trying to avoid.

Whats wrong with watching shows where you want to see yourself though? Don't you want to see youself in these characters? In these movies and video games? Dont you want to see somebody you can relate to thats like you and goes through the same things you do? Dont you want to see yourself in pieces of fiction?
:patrice:

I love my sistas but when I play video games and watch movies and TV shows I want to see myself in these characters....

To elaborate.
:patrice:

I hope that fleshes out the point Im trying to make.

White people (hate to deflect to them but) they can see people that look EXACTLY like them in these movies and TV shows.

Us....?

Ignore these people. They know what you actually meant, but they're gonna keep gaslighting

My thing is I support Black media and Black entertainment. But lets keep it real...as a Black Man...can you RELATE to the adventures of a Black Warrior Princess?

:patrice:

You might find it ENTERTAINING....but is it RELATABLE? Because those are two different things.
:ohhh:

Its like this. When I was younger in the 1990s, I used to wear glasses. Because of that people called me "Steve Urkel" because thats who people said I reminded them by...because of what they saw on the TV. Or they called me Jaquese from the Real World. Or Tay Zonday. Or whatever young Black Man had glasses.

:patrice:

Meanwhile...white men and white women have characters in the media that if not fantasy are somewhat relatable to them. Keyword: RELATABLE.

AGAIN. Please feel free to point out where I could improve on saying this...

I can’t speak to the rest of it, but I’ve definitely noticed it on TV and film. As representation increases for black women and black LGBTQ groups (as well as other, non-black, minorities), representation for straight black men decreases. And I think the root cause of that comes down to the fact white people are still over represented in media.

Representation for black people is still limited across the board. Most roles are still more likely to go to white actors and actresses more often than not. That means black people usually only get 1-2 roles in a movie or a TV show. Used to be that would likely get filled by a straight black man. But with a greater push for diversity and representation among different groups, we’re starting to see an increase for other types of black representation.

I have no problem with seeing black women or gay black people get these roles. They deserve to see themselves reflected in media too, and to tell their stories. I do have a problem with the fact that because white people continue to dominate the media landscape to a ridiculous degree, it means that advancement of black women and LGBTQ groups means less representation for black men like myself. There should be enough room for all of us, plus other minorities. But again, white people take most of it, so everyone else fights over scraps… :yeshrug:

Personally, this is why I stick to the NFL/NBA and a few select shows (Snowfall, Godfather of Harlem, etc.) whenever I watch TV. I’m not supporting anything unless I feel I’m watching the type of representation I want to see.

Society is not.

The film industry is jumping the shark with all the fake woke tropes tho.

I think it bridges two demographics together easier because tbh cacs are prejudiced and are not going to watch Black stories.

Use Martin vs. Friends demographics as an example.

My opinion is that it's all driven by advertising and new age marketing ultimately.

The larger the demographics...more reach/sales.

Ad placement and sponsorship becomes more lucrative.

My theory.

Emphasis and cosign on the bolded. I root for everyone Black to win. I support Black people getting opportunities and like you said, Black Women and Black LGBTQ deserve to have their stories told and be represented.

I want things like a Black version of Hobo With a Shotgun...or Machete...some no holds barred knuckle up action movie where a Black Man kicks racist white people's asses for two hours. Or some Black horror movies or sci fi movies with strong Black Male and Female leads.

We just cant get that and its frustrating.
:snoop:

I might have to make millions and start my own production studio.

I really think some of us don't understand what it means to see yourself in entertainment. White peoppe rarely question it cause they're overrepresented in the media.

You said you enjoy the NBA and NFL...what about Black men arent into sports though? They almost have nothing to watch with people they can relate to to a tee.

I like sports. Then I realize Im 5'11 185 and not really athletic and there goes that. :yeshrug:i cant relate to athletes like that. :lolbron:i respect them...but damn...they a different breed I couldnt be like MJ.:mjlol:

What about Young Black boys that want to be doctors? Or scientists? Or astronauts? Where's the representation in the media for that? Art influences life. Representation matters. When young Black boys and girls see someone that looks like them doing what they want to do, they will be.more likely to do it.

What if you're a young black boy not into sports and all you see is black men in sports?
:patrice:

Young Black Boys see themselves in Rappers and Athletes in the media because these are the few images of Black Male success that are presented and there needs to be more. Unfortunately we aren't there yet and it seems Society has more of a desire to contain and control young black boys instead of nurturing them to become productive black men.
