Superstar
Underrated.
One of the best freestylers on the planet.
Not the greatest writer, but a good writer when he feels like it.
The first rap megastar who wasn't pop.
His first week sales (800,000) for Doggystyle for a rapper was groundbreaking.
The Wayne wave, the Em wave, the 50 Cent wave, Snoop did all that with his debut back when it wasn't a thing.
Snoop's problem is focus. He is laid back to a fault. Dre (and D.O.C.) and Pharell brought the best out of him. Gave him the right and appropriate sonics and made sure Snoop had a certain intensity on the mic. You rarely hear him have without those two.
Because he never really matched the Doggystyle and Chronic era (which was Snoop at his best), people tend to forget about him as a rapper, and just focus on the persona that is Snoop.
Highlights post Doggystyle:
No Limit Top Dogg: Best Snoop album post doggystyle. Closest Snoop got back to his early days. Meech Wells, Dre, and Quik's production were great.
Blue Carpet Treatment: Dre cuts really standout on this one.
R&G: Rhythm and Gangster with Pharell overseeing it.
