It's not new. It's actually common outside of the state's. Every once and again someone "American" tries to get it to pop off and who knows how long they stick around.
I'm pretty sure you can go to an Asian market or a real Mexican or south American market and get some grasshoppers, crickets and other shyt. Usually seasoned or sugared. I remember in like 97 a teacher brought in some cinnamon crickets from Mexico. They were like Lil churros. shyt was fire.
