It's weird. I've always considered him a decent director who's good at making serviceable though not spectacular films. But because he lacks a signature style and is kind of all over the place when it comes to subject matter I've never looked at him as a true auteur.

Yet when I looked at his filmography, he has some legit classics.

Grand Theft Auto
Night Shift
Splash
Coc00n
Gung Ho
Willow
Parenthood
Backdraft
Far and Away
The Paper
Apollo 13
Ransom
EDtv
How the Grinch Stole Christmas
A Beautiful Mind
The Missing
Cinderella Man
The Da Vinci Code
Frost/Nixon
Angels & Demons
The Dilemma
Rush
In the Heart of the Sea
Inferno
Solo: A Star Wars Story

Interested in hearing people's takes. Elite director or just a serviceable director for hire?

He has two classics, Apollo 13 and How The Grinch Stole Christmas, and the rest are in the 5-7 out of 10 range.
