Nah it's disgraceful but this is how most European sponsored and non-sponsored leaders/dictators live in S. America, Africa etc. Remember what his roots are their similar to Idi Amin. Live in deckadence while ya people live in squalor.

Marxism and demanding a one-party state is a useful way to create an ideological underpinning for total authoritarian control of a country.

Ehh I think has to do with commodity economies cut off from the global economy using Marxist rhetoric as a sort of passive aggressive opposition to the West rather than any sort of flawed underpinnings with Marxism itself.

If we are being honest, capitalism has allowed a small group of elite far greater control over the global economy than some despot dictator over some single country whose only assets are raw goods.

It's not that reactionary. Nkrumah, Nyerere, Mobutu and others used such rhetoric when their economies were both doing well and connected to global economies.

It allows African leaders to gain control over local elites and economies (to the detriment of economic growth) while sticking a thumb to the West. However that thumb gouges out the eye of the indignant.

Define well?

Imp It's only a detriment because the larger gang subscribes to capitalism and authoritarianism is likely under any ideology given similar conditions.

Well as in their economies were growing beyond 4 per cent per year.

We may be talking about two different things here. Socialist policies enacted by African governments contributed to contraction of various economies.

The only example I can think of where divided elites within an African country are trying to advance free market principles or socialist economic principles in order to win over a populace is South Africa. From what I can observe, African governments typically use statist or developmental economic principles over more free market ones even IF they say they subscribe to capitalism or neoliberalism.

Mugabe is a Marxist. Zimbabwe's current failures are reminiscent of the conclusion of policies pursued by Nyerere, Nkrumah and others in Africa.
:ohhh::jbhmm: nkrumah was evil? or simply poor at understanding economics
