You actually seem like a cool poster but you need some guidance when it comes to this dating/relationship thing. One thing that may save you is your willingness to look inside yourself and analyze your faults and flaws. you seem open-minded and willing to explore where your responsibility lies when it comes to the failiures on your journey.
as far as this thread, i think like someone else said, your mistake was to come ask us what a break means instead of asking him. It's like you already decided you were going on a date with the new dude but were looking for a seal of approbation to make it "ok". IMO you did the right thing overall by breaking up.
