I had an epiphany last night while waiting for my food. Place closes at 11pm

It’s about 10:40

The only ppl in the building, is the employee, me, an older breh, and a brehette outside waiting in her

I obviously don’t interact with her since I waited inside, and me and older breh said a few words then continue to be on our phones the whole time.

Then it hit me. What if there were no cell phones like how it used to be? We would either sat in silence and boredom or made small talk like back in the days. However my question is, would that really be a better option ?

A lot of older ppl act like no one interacts with each other anymore, it’s ruining society etc ..
For one, that’s grossly over estimated. And for two, let’s grant the argument. Let’s say no one does interact anymore, is thats really a big deal. What would have really been gained by two strangers at Pizza Hut making small talk for 10 minutes at 11pm?

What is to be gained by small talk period? When I look at ppl who champion the old days , I don’t see them being any better or worse at communicating than let’s say someone in GenZ. It’s some who are social awkward some who are extremely charismatic then some who are everything in between

To sum it up, I no longer believe ppl choosing to be on their phone instead of making small talk with everyone matters nor does it cause more ppl to become social awkward or whatever they claim.

Say whatever you will about how valuable small talk really is or how much more or less awkward you think generations are in comparison to each other, but I do really think the younger generation has trouble maintaining eye contact because of this.

Just because you don't know those people, doesn't mean they aren't worth knowing.

Yeah, being on cellphones all the time is definitely stunting the communication skills necessary for strong social bonds that are needed for a healthy society.

Add in the extremely polarizing and brain numbing content that most people consume and you have a horde of walking zombies.

I didn't even mention the biological and psychological reasons for why human contact and actual face to face interactions are essential for staying healthy.

not bad if it's in moderation, but too much of one thing is gonna have consequences in most cases

i take little walks around my neighborhood, which leads to busy parks and intersections, and most people i walk past i look in the eyes

a lot of people either don't look back, look down, or give me this look
